Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cook-Rite 60-Minute Quartz Timer, WhiteCustomer Review: Mother-in-Law approved! Summary: 4 Stars
Based on the mixed reviews here, I really want to give this timer more time to... well, to fail. But it's been a few months, and so far it's "ticking" along just fine.
I bought it on a whim. My mother-in-law moved in with us. She's decidedly analog -- i.e. doesn't like digital scales or timers, etc. -- but her old Sunbeam mechanical timer has a problem: it's ring is too quiet and too short. She doesn't hear it half the time, and frankly, I'm surprised we haven't had a kitchen fire up to now.
This timer isn't meant to offer the to-the-second precision of a standard kitchen timer, and for most purposes, that's fine. It's meant to replace a familiar technology and improve on it, and in that respect, it succeeds.
Because it doesn't tick, there's a red LED on the face that illuminates to indicate that it's on and counting down. The dial moves to give a quick visual indication of how many minutes are remaining (and this is a feat in and of itself for something so inexpensive). And of course there's the beep that escalates in both volume and frequency when the time reaches zero. It's loud, long and insistent enough to catch her attention nearly every time (maybe not so much if she's out of the room!).
The cons:
- It does feel cheap. It's extremely lightweight, the dial turns almost too easily, and the plastic feels brittle. These are somewhat subjective impressions, I realize, but they are qualities the designer of this product should pay attention to. It wouldn't take much to impart a greater sense of quality in this timer.
- The dial needs just a little bit more resistance to it. This ties in with my previous comment, and I'm guessing the reason it's so easy to turn is so it's easier to mechanically drive back to zero as it counts down. But regardless, seeing as how it is designed to mimic the operation of a mechanical kitchen timer, it should strive to replicate not just the appearance, but the tactile experience, as well.
- This timer is difficult to find. Note that neither "dial" nor "electronic" appear in the product description. Even just now when I was searching for it on Amazon to write this review, I had a difficult time finding it. (I'm just mentioning this as an aside; I didn't gig my rating based on this.)
Customer Review: Nice and Quiet Summary: 5 Stars
Just what I had in mind, an accurate timer that did not tick. We need one that does hours........
Customer Review: Old-Fashioned timer in a new fangled way Summary: 5 Stars
It was my mistake but I thought I was purchasing an old-fashioned wind up type timer. I should have read Amazon's copy better. Instead I was pleasantly surprised to find a battery operated timer that looks like the old-fashioned timer.
No matter as I am very pleased with the operation of this new-fashioned timer. It's easy to read the numbers, a plus for me as I am a middle-age woman wearing bifocals, easy to set the timer and the ring is loud but not too loud.
In fact, this timer works a lot like the old-fashioned one except it needs a battery to keep on going.
Highly recommend.
Customer Review: Perfect for Pomodoro work productivity Summary: 5 Stars
I use the pomodoro technique to tackle my work in short bursts, and this timer is great.
Furthermore, it combines the best of traditional and digital timers.
The timer is silent until your time is up, which allows you to focus without being bothered by the ticking of a traditional timer. The escalating alarm means that you aren't spooked when it goes off next to you and you hear it when you're far away. Furthermore, the 90-second duration of the alarm is superior to traditional timers.
Instead of fiddling with a digital timer, you simply twist the dial to your desired countdown period. Intuitive interface, and it's simple to give yourself more time/ switch it off with a quick twist. Since the knob's pointer turns as time passes, it's easy to see how much time is left. IMO, the battery life is better than other electronic timers too.
I do wish that it came with times longer than 60 minutes, but the countdown is long enough for most people.
In conclusion, it works. Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Simple device, works well Summary: 4 Stars
This is a simple, feather-touch dial cooking timer with an electronic timing & alarm element.
It is powered by a common AA battery.
Just got it;Used it several times;Works darn well!
Only reason for 4 stars and not 5 is question of durability.
It's kinda' lightweight. I wouldn't want to drop it hard.
But if not mistreated, will hopefully last awhile.
A heavier-duty, more-lasting, *metal* version of this timer would be ideal.
But I like it so far.
