I bought this from a local store which was helpful when the first unit did not work. As other reviewer point out, the switches are not obvious, it is not water resistant, it takes rather long to turn on, and the case slips off. Having said that, it provides good and repeatable temperature readings in good references: ice water and boiling water. I depend on it regularly for bread. I was able to change the battery, but only with the help of another reviewer.
With a professional background in temperature measurement, I can point out that contact probes like these can NEVER be truly instant read. The bottom portion of the probe must be heated (or cooled) by the measured object until it reaches about the same temperature. The thicker the probe the more material that must change temperature and the longer it will take. This unit goes from room temperature to completed bread temperature (195 degrees F) in about 5 to 10 seconds. (That time is just a guess.)
