Customer Review: DOA - this piece of trash a waste of time

Having bought this for my wife for a Christmas present, I was saddened when we found out the device shipped to us was dead on arrival. Made in China by some contract manufacturer it seems. I don't know how well it works, when it works; but I do agree with the previous reviewer that it feels very plasticky and cheap. One can hear/feel the plastic case rubbing when unfolding the probe, and accessing the battery compartment is difficult (this a design issue). Not water proof or water resistant, the instuctions note that the warranty will be void should you accidently pour liquid on the thermometer casing.
Too many red flags to ignore, back it goes to Amazon.
I'll likely step up to a Thermapen, and get something that, well, works (and hopefully works well).

Using thermocouple technology, this new thermometer from Taylor Precision Products has superior advantages to other thermometers. This technology enables the thermometer to react faster to changes in temperature and will be more stable when reading the temperature. The results? Quicker response times and the ability for more accurate and stable temperature readings. Response times as quick as 4 seconds! (from room temperature in boiling water)The 9867FDA also has some incredible features that will benefit all ? from the serious chef, to the experienced foodie, and the novice cook. First, the incredible range of -40ºF to 562ºF, with enhanced accuracy in the key cooking range of 0ºF to 230ºF. Second, the ultra thin, needle like tip is only 1.5mm or 1/16th of an inch, and leaves a much smaller hole in food so the flavorful juices do not escape while checking the temperatures.This Taylor thermometer can also be recalibrated. Every thermometer does not hold the accuracy forever, especially after accidentally dropping. A simple process with a few button presses will get the thermometer back to the superior accuracy that can be expected. Another unique feature is the hold button. When using the thermometer for food in the oven, simply push the thermometer into the food, press the hold button and the readout holds the temperature of the food. This helps by not having to keep the oven door open longer than needed while precious heat escapes.The foldable temperature stem tucks away for storage, and also acts as the thermometer shut off to save batteries.
