The top portion is made of two piece plastic. My initial concern was water penetration, but I've been using it for close to a year now and it works great. Doesn't rust and it's accurate. I do recommend it for household use.

The thermometer measures temperatures from 120 to 180 degrees F, and the optimum frothing temperature zone is indicated on the 1-1/4-inch dial in purple.
